Knock, Knock
7×10″
The past 4 weeks I have been teaching a course on Old Doors, Locks, and Latches in watercolor.
This beautiful old knocker was what I painted for class this week. It is from one of the doors at El Molino, which is where I teach in Spain. I would love to know the age of this knocker because nothing was symmetrical on it. It must have been crafted by hand.
I will be teaching a similar course at Brock House on Jericho Beach starting April 8.

Oh, this is so cool! I love the composition and the lines pulling the eye to just the right places. I never thought about the fact that less straight edges indicates something was hand made… I love that concept… there is something philosophical about all that.. :) Lovely piece!

  • I really like doors and knockers as a painting subject, there's something about them, love how you've done this Leslie

  • Thanks Katherine. In several cultures, craftspeople would purposely leave flaws to acknowledge that there is only one perfect being. I wonder if that is something that happened here or if it was just a young artisan learning her craft.

  • Thank you Sharon. Doors and knockers are a wonderful subject to paint.

  • Wow! How great this door knocker-themed painting is. I love it. I love how you put the details on it. It is a beautiful work of art.
