Eilean Donan Castle

Last weekend I taught a course on Castles and Churches of Europe. I wanted to show how to get the awesome texture of old stone castles so I chose to paint Eilean Doonan Castle in Scotland. The castle is near the village of Dornie and the Isle of Skye. I have never been there but a student of mine is from Dornie and is always talking about how amazing it is. She has a collection of castle photos a mile high and happily let me go through them. This painting was inspired by one of her favorite photos with the orange sea lilies in front.
